Mount Meru Trek – 4 Days

Overview

Standing majestically at 4,566 meters, Mount Meru is an active stratovolcano located within Arusha National Park. Known for its lush forests, diverse wildlife, and panoramic views of Kilimanjaro, this climb offers a unique combination of trekking and safari experience.
Trekkers often spot buffaloes, giraffes, monkeys, and flamingos before even reaching the slopes. The climb is steep and scenic, leading through several ecological zones — from tropical forest to alpine desert — before reaching the stunning summit of Socialist Peak.

Day 1: Momella Gate (1,500 m) → Miriakamba Hut (2,514 m)

Daily Elevation & Distance:
Start from Momella Gate (1,500 m) and ascend to Miriakamba Hut (2,514 m) — approximately 10 km / 4–5 hours of hiking.

Habitats & Vegetation:
Dense montane forest rich in fig trees, ferns, and mosses. You may spot buffaloes, giraffes, and monkeys along the trail.

Temperature Ranges:
15°C – 25°C (cool evenings, warm daytime).

Meals & Accommodation:
Lunch, Dinner | Overnight at Miriakamba Hut (mountain huts with beds and shared facilities).

Activities & Highlights:

  • Registration at Arusha National Park Gate

  • Trek through lush green forest with ranger escort

🗓 Day 2: Miriakamba Hut (2,514 m) → Saddle Hut (3,570 m)

Daily Elevation & Distance:
Ascent from 2,514 m to 3,570 m — about 8 km / 4–5 hours of hiking.

Habitats & Vegetation:
Transition from montane forest to heath and moorland, with giant lobelias and everlasting flowers.

Temperature Ranges:
10°C – 20°C (colder evenings, mild daytime).

Meals & Accommodation:
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Overnight at Saddle Hut (mountain huts).

Activities & Highlights:

  • Hike with panoramic views of the Meru Crater and Ash Cone

  • Optional afternoon hike to Little Meru (3,820 m) for acclimatization

  • Spectacular sunset views with Kilimanjaro visible across the plains


🗓 Day 3: Saddle Hut (3,570 m) → Socialist Peak (4,566 m) → Miriakamba Hut (2,514 m)

Daily Elevation & Distance:
Summit ascent from 3,570 m to 4,566 m, then descend to 2,514 m — about 18 km / 10–12 hours total.

Habitats & Vegetation:
From alpine desert near the summit to heath and forest as you descend.

Temperature Ranges:
0°C to -5°C at the summit (very cold pre-dawn start).

Meals & Accommodation:
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Overnight at Miriakamba Hut.

Activities & Highlights:

  • Early start (around 2:00 AM) to reach the summit by sunrise

  • Steep climb via Rhino Point and Cobra Point to Socialist Peak (4,566 m)

  • Watch sunrise illuminating Mount Kilimanjaro and the Meru Crater

  • Descend to Miriakamba Hut for a restful evening


🗓 Day 4: Miriakamba Hut (2,514 m) → Momella Gate (1,500 m)

Daily Elevation & Distance:
Descent from 2,514 m to 1,500 m — about 10 km / 3–4 hours.

Habitats & Vegetation:
Return through forest and grassland zones teeming with wildlife.

Temperature Ranges:
15°C – 25°C.

Meals & Accommodation:
Breakfast, Lunch | End of trek (transfer to hotel in Arusha or Moshi).

Activities & Highlights:

  • Gentle descent through rich forest habitat

  • Opportunity to see colobus monkeys and warthogs

  • Collect your climbing certificates at the gate
